by Paul Raworth Bennett

brown glassy eyes
the unblinking gaze
of adoration
of infinite trust
of pure til-death-do-us-part

black button nose
moist, ready, twitching
(just a little)

pink tongue, spring-loaded
with a fusillade of kisses
(and barely visible)

eighteen pounds of
warm, woolly,
buff-coloured love
quietly perched atop
four floppy legs

leaning forward
primed for action
waiting for the signal
